A few years ago they regularly hauled a freight No. 4190 that ran from Sandgate to Botany daily. We were able to view it locally at Cowan where up to four C class would head into the Up Relief to await a passenger service to pass. The C's dropped down into low idle and this sound was what made them likeable. Luckily they headed towards Sydney around midday and after following them towards Sydney for a while then we headed home for lunch.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">A few other things have been happening around the layout, a passenger platform has been built, so I will cover that in the next update.</span></p>MoonShinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14969031394913677234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-63559300823165294.post-49054081533211273962023-04-15T00:17:00.002-07:002023-04-15T00:17:47.044-07:00Diesel House (2)<p><span style="font-family: verdana;"> The diesel shed has been basically finished. It has been a composition of bits and pieces, a custom job to fit the space. The overall size is not large and will only fit around four smaller main line type locos such as the 44 class locomotives. There is not enough space to devote to a larger shed as this area has to also accommodate a turntable and storage around it.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrU5lO9iaqItqaQi8DcA5VW8NgeNubVpqNDaxc3KBwBHSMCGT4eTLXEWU_vo7YS7RpIcmkHuaghcaOyuRZAQS_SZzhlwynwZMHgoAn7q7AVGkjgoocf1q3ynQcDvJQwUieMSL8HBBcRj8B-BPOOzQaKSYylBSwWlCe8sJQToFYOOxtm0oJw_HCc_w/s3738/20230320_144701.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2268" data-original-width="3738" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrU5lO9iaqItqaQi8DcA5VW8NgeNubVpqNDaxc3KBwBHSMCGT4eTLXEWU_vo7YS7RpIcmkHuaghcaOyuRZAQS_SZzhlwynwZMHgoAn7q7AVGkjgoocf1q3ynQcDvJQwUieMSL8HBBcRj8B-BPOOzQaKSYylBSwWlCe8sJQToFYOOxtm0oJw_HCc_w/w400-h243/20230320_144701.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlBwycuO_YesTAT_Lo8y5RsHzRGQmq-8DvWHAdeZWsmylQ_xve-GYUcY1VdIkUV1telRU6PO8dOxvCTOlg9egVecfIGnuM5CHvuOsFN3ZmDA3EjVtFbufP8guyA7oZ0sv3c1N57dZUK_AdZTbopyekpiSVGS5-8OH3VjH3cKTGKr1aNvVoLAsfD1E/s2624/20230323_163836.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2624" data-original-width="2268" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlBwycuO_YesTAT_Lo8y5RsHzRGQmq-8DvWHAdeZWsmylQ_xve-GYUcY1VdIkUV1telRU6PO8dOxvCTOlg9egVecfIGnuM5CHvuOsFN3ZmDA3EjVtFbufP8guyA7oZ0sv3c1N57dZUK_AdZTbopyekpiSVGS5-8OH3VjH3cKTGKr1aNvVoLAsfD1E/w346-h400/20230323_163836.jpg" width="346" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi98XG5OiuVQ4De4l6-o0wqjlkJkkFZxioC0L6RVp625WA_7oPUxpoyftmIWRbQtbxE7g9M6-GgU8ZEvBKqIMhJ3kdaa89QElRS7mS71XUQ5QmtCKR8Uge9S22TN9mVo2yDf_855X_gv0kLLjcD6aWywoe_d6DcYn_ofA9uD22yZZsa66g9wxXP65Y/s4032/20230324_170913.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2268" data-original-width="4032" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi98XG5OiuVQ4De4l6-o0wqjlkJkkFZxioC0L6RVp625WA_7oPUxpoyftmIWRbQtbxE7g9M6-GgU8ZEvBKqIMhJ3kdaa89QElRS7mS71XUQ5QmtCKR8Uge9S22TN9mVo2yDf_855X_gv0kLLjcD6aWywoe_d6DcYn_ofA9uD22yZZsa66g9wxXP65Y/w400-h225/20230324_170913.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUIgM8mZ5XDZLsVx_oKqhhGROctSgfrqiPX4mnpPP-medRZPto_Z7dE8ZQRWHKZeKCZr1BuME-2ZaPSrDbzJeBtcITx43U20e9d4OrAx2GwLGudCYCqoWTJR0q0qhCuYKin_BdIzA3fhGr766MJVuVOxropOaemtJQImIbbD9kYwi9gsyDZCwjpEM/s4032/20230324_170934.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="2268" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUIgM8mZ5XDZLsVx_oKqhhGROctSgfrqiPX4mnpPP-medRZPto_Z7dE8ZQRWHKZeKCZr1BuME-2ZaPSrDbzJeBtcITx43U20e9d4OrAx2GwLGudCYCqoWTJR0q0qhCuYKin_BdIzA3fhGr766MJVuVOxropOaemtJQImIbbD9kYwi9gsyDZCwjpEM/w225-h400/20230324_170934.jpg" width="225" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: verdana;">The shed roof which was made from a station platform kit had to be cut down to size. This will be situated on the left hand side of the room and sit mid way down in the loco area. Room for the shed is tight and it will sit against the main line track that is next to the passenger platform.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsp1AaMIDikYT3jjsFmZwUGthLHFO6lbaQpM3pE5_zSNQERu96eFGv2BR-EegR0GrRnWRZh8rbm5mAyi0NGYNnF3_uiWiwvj5oRl1Kw8otnTiwUDIMoqiBdfeaM3DGbYVpUHC5Vy9ydFJFBeFqYMuiM0QVLDew5i6WHiecgFrydsu-1-suJzXL0bU/s3288/Layout%20Plan%20-%20Structures%20-%20Diesel%20shed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="753" data-original-width="3288" height="91" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsp1AaMIDikYT3jjsFmZwUGthLHFO6lbaQpM3pE5_zSNQERu96eFGv2BR-EegR0GrRnWRZh8rbm5mAyi0NGYNnF3_uiWiwvj5oRl1Kw8otnTiwUDIMoqiBdfeaM3DGbYVpUHC5Vy9ydFJFBeFqYMuiM0QVLDew5i6WHiecgFrydsu-1-suJzXL0bU/w400-h91/Layout%20Plan%20-%20Structures%20-%20Diesel%20shed.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Location of diesel shed<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: verdana;">Pictures of diesel sheds were hard to find, so the best compromise was to just freelance the shed to look like one. While trawling through Ebay one day I came across a shed that had potential. It was reasonably cheap and one of those items 'postage free' from China. (If only items from the states were as cheap!) The kit had the usual four walls, a flat roof and floor. There were sprues that fitted suitable equivalent holes to make it all rigid. In the end none of these were used.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">As other things with the layout progressed the loco shed project was put aside. Then I got the package with the parts out again. There were no instructions or photos, just the parts in a plastic bag. I was fairly straight forward anyway. I did a dry run with the parts on the layout and quickly realised that what I had on hand would only make half a shed, so another kit was ordered and turned up some time later.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">So when it was time to get serious the parts were taken out of their respective bags and one seemed smaller than the other. The penny quickly dropped and I realised either I was sent an N scale kit or I had ticked the wrong box when ordering. A period of many months had elapsed and although I could have re-ordered a second HO kit I felt that using the N scale one, some interesting mods would have to be made. The other issue was that the windows would be smaller, but side by side they seemed to work out Okay.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaxww8DIIR0GT4gXkmsiIgBfXP39cCq-LmE2c0WEZK6UvXScAJ3dJDpvdF6YymagTCXmc8-xgKhMjlUwjiaPCc3CPRhLo6pUhu0KNShx852HjOJrpKxOidOKXbz8oCen9p8LTyP2mscvOg7qsk5OihbyVJUnzrQGgLtWSctcpUWv-QT-OJdZ-_3x8/s4032/20230309_172109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1813" data-original-width="4032" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaxww8DIIR0GT4gXkmsiIgBfXP39cCq-LmE2c0WEZK6UvXScAJ3dJDpvdF6YymagTCXmc8-xgKhMjlUwjiaPCc3CPRhLo6pUhu0KNShx852HjOJrpKxOidOKXbz8oCen9p8LTyP2mscvOg7qsk5OihbyVJUnzrQGgLtWSctcpUWv-QT-OJdZ-_3x8/w400-h180/20230309_172109.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ex station roof</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: verdana;">The hunt was on for a suitable roof. Worse case scenario was to manufacture a flat roof which should have been easy to make. But a visit to the Forestville Model rail exhibition led me straight to the second hand section. Getting in there on a Saturday meant a slow trip into the narrow room to look for bargains. At times you couldn't even see the tables due to a wall of bodies doing the same bargain hunting. Way down the back of the room was where there was some sort of order and the 'other than locos and rolling stock' section was. As it was two hours in after opening I didn't expect to see much suitable but then I spotted some type of european station roofing complete with the supports. When you are into scratch building you have to quickly determine if you can do something with it. So with this item I could see that the roof looked a good possibility. The were skylights in the roof which would let light into the shed. Maybe this style wouldn't work in real life but I thought it would work for me. Can't complain, it only cost $10 for the station roof.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The shed is fairly small being 400m long and 125mm wide. This covered two tracks and will provide coverage for four locos around the size of 44, 45 etc style locos. It would not give coverage for two NR type locos completely on the same track. The design is mainly to give the appearance of infrastructure to house a few locos. I am not sure what will be provided inside the shed at this stage. To match the size of the shed I had to cut down the length and width of the platform roofing. It sorta came out OK. To fit the walls onto the roof section I glued an L angle evergreen strip along the base of the roof. This also formed a gutter and tidied up the edging and made it look a lot neater. This can be seen in the roof photo above. Naturally a second section had to be added as the sections out of the bag are not long enough.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjecRp33x2Lr-oZONiSDBhvUdmtuGJrHsjb_gxMSdDocNjSW93o25dZxtzHOxvaeLTpXTJ9BXJrf9JwujOhu7ww05bP4Cu8XahcvaF2K5Lp8zaDC8yi_bOBU6fd36yRNnL3eMZvI68mAeqjQpYNyalFRF3UZMYyfMVzYIdJz2aezUKC8-iK7lVWYOg/s3540/20230313_145419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2268" data-original-width="3540" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjecRp33x2Lr-oZONiSDBhvUdmtuGJrHsjb_gxMSdDocNjSW93o25dZxtzHOxvaeLTpXTJ9BXJrf9JwujOhu7ww05bP4Cu8XahcvaF2K5Lp8zaDC8yi_bOBU6fd36yRNnL3eMZvI68mAeqjQpYNyalFRF3UZMYyfMVzYIdJz2aezUKC8-iK7lVWYOg/w400-h256/20230313_145419.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Whoops N scale</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: verdana;">The above photo shows how the N scale sections were infilled with HO scale corrugated section to match the height of the correct HO sections. It was possible last year to add some locomotives and rolling stock to the fleet.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This fleet expansion will mean that some extra sidings will have to be squeezed in somewhere and they will slightly encroach on the bedroom space. Even the space behind the door will be utilised as a siding to store some rolling stock, every spot counts. So when these extra sidings get constructed the track plan for the layout will be updated. Other than the extra sidings all the track is laid and just awaiting the ballast and structures to be done.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Among the extra items purchased for the layout was the Eureka model of 3801 and the HUB set to go with it. A sound Austrains 35 class as well as an Auscision sound 48 class. The big item that is being waited on is the Auscision C class which seem to be taking forever to get here. Why does it take so long after the pilot models arrive to the actual production models being available?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">And pictured above two very nice arrivals are the Auscision 44 class that arrived today. Two in the standard indian red were obtained.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The plan now is to build the extra sidings and then start on doing the scenery and structures etc. So keep viewing and it is hoped the blog updates will be more regular this year</span></p><p><br /></p>MoonShinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14969031394913677234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-63559300823165294.post-81927341590553823022022-06-04T00:53:00.000-07:002022-06-04T00:53:37.592-07:00Container depot<p><span style="font-family: arial;">With all the track now laid on the layout it was time to re examine to see how it all works together. A purchase of 13 bogie container wagons gave a reason to incorporate sidings somewhere on the layout to create some shunting interest. Ideally both inside and outside corners are ideal for this purpose. The container sidings were laid out on the inside of the curve and were within easy reach for shunting.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgprE5I0kPrniSpOgDlnkfy_eJ_NtqZttZN6puJ_xqpy_ze8QYYFGgaWAALwBMzJBIkLkdUK2h4hJN3VByZFvov5M5wfm49m3avxsdMSc81aZRf7W42B3yQ4K1IgXojIzvau1VHsUdwgtEdQdAzh2pT4zRNDCBoxcuTQ7FvI8bz-N36llD7MqG1cdI/s4032/20200224_181019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgprE5I0kPrniSpOgDlnkfy_eJ_NtqZttZN6puJ_xqpy_ze8QYYFGgaWAALwBMzJBIkLkdUK2h4hJN3VByZFvov5M5wfm49m3avxsdMSc81aZRf7W42B3yQ4K1IgXojIzvau1VHsUdwgtEdQdAzh2pT4zRNDCBoxcuTQ7FvI8bz-N36llD7MqG1cdI/w300-h400/20200224_181019.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Early design days<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">As can be seen by the above photo the outside of the curve will have a siding for cement and a private siding general goods. Afterwards the paint can be cleaned off.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhag8TZWMkKdLz5SiyQSdlDMf715PfYc3YU_YF4kULZ0HMrGddCSOKZteuEqos7taLJ7-6J3jdLaKjseHiZImDs1DHAQ4ucC_4eOkDFgBPML1aeME6QQZhgo8xNmFlwxPHpfGTycNpKi2de-ctFYD3UkAZ_62c1DMOeQVO2jk5e3x2Qz0wUoz59BMs/s4128/20210529_165843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2322" data-original-width="4128" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhag8TZWMkKdLz5SiyQSdlDMf715PfYc3YU_YF4kULZ0HMrGddCSOKZteuEqos7taLJ7-6J3jdLaKjseHiZImDs1DHAQ4ucC_4eOkDFgBPML1aeME6QQZhgo8xNmFlwxPHpfGTycNpKi2de-ctFYD3UkAZ_62c1DMOeQVO2jk5e3x2Qz0wUoz59BMs/w400-h225/20210529_165843.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVt8PUIEgzQuEkMvvUudHjqgrwFpan3igiJEc2WasUGZfwESLFXuMM-YLjY1cqAS4Dl2Do_QEnyo1f_5HGMVTQtv4_FYtGlIUqjU0SNLOZgaIGVb_eFdNfI2HD0_cdnKs5vtFRPtfUDFlV2Nk_tCRvyYZX6ZXhZ09NZSkDRQiiB_LxTWVO-W6NXcI/s4128/20210529_175923.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2322" data-original-width="4128" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVt8PUIEgzQuEkMvvUudHjqgrwFpan3igiJEc2WasUGZfwESLFXuMM-YLjY1cqAS4Dl2Do_QEnyo1f_5HGMVTQtv4_FYtGlIUqjU0SNLOZgaIGVb_eFdNfI2HD0_cdnKs5vtFRPtfUDFlV2Nk_tCRvyYZX6ZXhZ09NZSkDRQiiB_LxTWVO-W6NXcI/w400-h225/20210529_175923.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cork sheeting is laid between and around the tracks<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">I think the cork works well and the sheeting was purchased from the Spotlight store. That bit is the liftout section that completes the double track around the room. It is only a short piece that lifts out across the doorway. This then allows access to the room when the layout is not in operation.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This section has a facing crossover on it which allows trains on the outer circle to crossover to the inner circle. This will be used mainly for locomotives heading towards the loco depot. At the moment it is not powered but the panel has provision for its use, the buttons already in place. It is planned to use top mount Peco point motors as it will be easier than mounting them underneath.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjEDsJJDBnwhb2pqOCSDL-CiOVWvyXAcRqI-ZGFPGeIsV4sC_jXaZZL1wxyvzqVGT--HyK_me8FzLveFt__MFE6HEW5gnHtgMSl-e4fJTSnJ_jkouKxWWtCV-L2RYX3OQIkLixG20kBbDn5ZOZLeAYLk5EQ7iacvm3YU23iFPN8qHCpSp9rSqFd_NM=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjEDsJJDBnwhb2pqOCSDL-CiOVWvyXAcRqI-ZGFPGeIsV4sC_jXaZZL1wxyvzqVGT--HyK_me8FzLveFt__MFE6HEW5gnHtgMSl-e4fJTSnJ_jkouKxWWtCV-L2RYX3OQIkLixG20kBbDn5ZOZLeAYLk5EQ7iacvm3YU23iFPN8qHCpSp9rSqFd_NM=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Liftout section in place and outer track under construction</td></tr></tbody></table></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRqC4FPX6z8LHJXDtoIJEsQ67gumCMA2fSDy8kIkaFTKhcuxo2aTKFnPI-bNX3ispM1XfJ4NgTvJ8yqXvogWpCD4FAMZjQCNTlAk0U-e_y0t1rsJjHcDquKMeXRRWe16-Zmls2PkEoAHJHH1t3YPkWqVkWPyXauA8RVoessD8kSvd0k1YKR0bZhbY=s4032" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgRqC4FPX6z8LHJXDtoIJEsQ67gumCMA2fSDy8kIkaFTKhcuxo2aTKFnPI-bNX3ispM1XfJ4NgTvJ8yqXvogWpCD4FAMZjQCNTlAk0U-e_y0t1rsJjHcDquKMeXRRWe16-Zmls2PkEoAHJHH1t3YPkWqVkWPyXauA8RVoessD8kSvd0k1YKR0bZhbY=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Facing crossover in place</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Cork is laid under the main line tracks mainly to provide a shoulder for the ballast. Mid way down the board is a crossover that takes the outside track to a future loader for the coal train.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Just the shear length of this long board seemed to chew through a box of track in no time. Some second hand track was available and this was used mainly in the sidings, leaving the new for the mains and relief lines. Once the outer track for the relief line that leads into the coal siding was laid it was just a matter of equal spacing the next set of tracks towards the front. I used offcut Peco track sleepers as spacers and also a 600mm ruler to ensure the track was straight.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">So it was fairly straight forward doing this board and won't require a lot of scenery work to complete it. It is planned just to have the ballast for the mains and dirt for the sidings. A line of telegraph poles will probably complete this section.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Here is a series of photos that shows the progress on baseboard No 5.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; On the inside corner will sit a two road container depot sidings. The head shunt for these two sidings will come off two dead end roads that run down the inside of the long baseboard that sits on the opposite side of the room from the loco area. The photo below shows how the tracks will be laid out. This will also form the control panel for the points on this side. It has been decided that only the crossover and points to the loops will be powered. Other siding will be hand operated as they are within close reach of the edge.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ-hBO43zzxkDsJUsqEhMoh8H7mCCfjQIR2BW4NOJOhj6qx2H9zk7QQHgGwgHlSokxsWhgCFtsXV5IuWnHDkLDNhYWB0ggWsU8i7a6TC35DVmMa-ovGYsgx9defW5Hon3xcIU08CePVA/s2048/20200514_141140.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ-hBO43zzxkDsJUsqEhMoh8H7mCCfjQIR2BW4NOJOhj6qx2H9zk7QQHgGwgHlSokxsWhgCFtsXV5IuWnHDkLDNhYWB0ggWsU8i7a6TC35DVmMa-ovGYsgx9defW5Hon3xcIU08CePVA/w400-h300/20200514_141140.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Schematic for freight sidings<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">The control panel shows that there will be seven tracks across the long section of baseboard. Unlike the two separate baseboards that form the loco area on the opposite side, this baseboard is just over three metres long. This is partly due to the fact that a bed needs to fit in the room somewhere and the less legs there the better. Once again these boards were constructed outside where there were no obstructions. Pine was used for the framework which is easy to work with. The top was fitted with ply and painted to seal the surface. The colour was just left over house paint and colour was irrelevant as it will eventually be covered up.</span><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYv-hd8eeT_FipM0CT7anDML2DzWluCC5ZvN7t27Y3rkoHe0g5iw6jv_LYGTOIP2PI0swOZFret8tAD1aTOr1gwxqfs9_IfYnipfXMav7fM9RuUAD5c6untkgOTqpg5LJ2HX_fgXPMJQ/s2048/20200214_174705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYv-hd8eeT_FipM0CT7anDML2DzWluCC5ZvN7t27Y3rkoHe0g5iw6jv_LYGTOIP2PI0swOZFret8tAD1aTOr1gwxqfs9_IfYnipfXMav7fM9RuUAD5c6untkgOTqpg5LJ2HX_fgXPMJQ/w300-h400/20200214_174705.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Frame work constructed<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjvsipD-iVLsmzMf3YiVYIcVNGm8t9CX0HspAnOvO7l2TCab1-yo-18WIrF_cL5PYLgNFrdQIgXlkJLIV7GUJFNM349N_tVLAgR3xJfOPVsCDXD0OeDehJ3uvqAFRpF2EYmiAuC44qOw/s2048/20200321_180718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjvsipD-iVLsmzMf3YiVYIcVNGm8t9CX0HspAnOvO7l2TCab1-yo-18WIrF_cL5PYLgNFrdQIgXlkJLIV7GUJFNM349N_tVLAgR3xJfOPVsCDXD0OeDehJ3uvqAFRpF2EYmiAuC44qOw/w300-h400/20200321_180718.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Top is covered with ply and painted<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The corner module was taken outside once again and laid up against the long baseboard No 5. This was done so that the tracks could be laid over the two boards to see how the track layout will go. The tracks leading to the container depot will start on board 5 and cross the join between boards 4 and 5. The only way to get the right positioning for this was to have the boards sitting together and the only place at this stage was outside. The adjoining tracks on baseboard 4 in the corner needed baseboard 5 to be finished and set up to be able to run the tracks across the joint. This allowed positioning of the printed circuit board under where the tracks would eventually be soldered and cut for removal one day.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhyphenhyphenh0s_DW9lKFnRBFDh1ihPEzwgyUwJ0cbCQJVxwvem6zv_98QzSma041NQJgxmxyh0m-Ysz6iSY1g9Oru9DT_C7cvavxLf63PBQnK7olDLSNkHvv4GFlE6uvmH1y3zSrk6PKmKud6Aw/s2048/20200224_181046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhyphenhyphenh0s_DW9lKFnRBFDh1ihPEzwgyUwJ0cbCQJVxwvem6zv_98QzSma041NQJgxmxyh0m-Ysz6iSY1g9Oru9DT_C7cvavxLf63PBQnK7olDLSNkHvv4GFlE6uvmH1y3zSrk6PKmKud6Aw/w300-h400/20200224_181046.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Setting out the tracks to see how it all fits</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwckHEY2CG7k-Ufk0q5_YUeKS-GEOU_7QJbjnHPfxOm9Z1XUTbDCaMeGQ5yMhz8vokOpZGsALxKrZhnHJhZpaOvtmCkEVnjMMQ3KhWxs_BOS47iiiAuyOOcssRwrGw5e_8k4AFUiJGkA/s2048/20200418_175718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwckHEY2CG7k-Ufk0q5_YUeKS-GEOU_7QJbjnHPfxOm9Z1XUTbDCaMeGQ5yMhz8vokOpZGsALxKrZhnHJhZpaOvtmCkEVnjMMQ3KhWxs_BOS47iiiAuyOOcssRwrGw5e_8k4AFUiJGkA/w300-h400/20200418_175718.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Looking down the long board No 5</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">As can be seen in the photos the tracks into the container depot come off the Down Through road. This will mean to shunt this siding there can't be any train in this road to block access. These sidings will provide some interesting shunting and take away the boredom of just going around in circles. If there is a container train running anti clockwise then it will need for the locos to run around and then shunt the train into the various roads, any overflow container wagons will need to be placed in other siding to wait their turn to be loaded/unloaded.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Container train on the other hand running clockwise will just use the crossover on board 4, run into the down through road and then shunt back into the sidings. So two scenarios for the two directions.<br /><br /></span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_lGwpzJvWADPMy7et00n_m68T0O29MOBE5HbR3VOlzvNd-4wETLVbeTLelwyySUpKItvv8NsrlBjvlUPgiE-i57sZzSZX5C0wXYsWG8E01QuuZvwVQC9SOt-dJi2_3u2EBul8Oz9CtA/s2048/20200423_181855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_lGwpzJvWADPMy7et00n_m68T0O29MOBE5HbR3VOlzvNd-4wETLVbeTLelwyySUpKItvv8NsrlBjvlUPgiE-i57sZzSZX5C0wXYsWG8E01QuuZvwVQC9SOt-dJi2_3u2EBul8Oz9CtA/w300-h400/20200423_181855.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Track laying progresse<span style="font-family: arial;">s</span></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">Once I was happy with how the track went across the joins and the baseboard had it coat of paint, legs were made and the board moved into the room to be butted up against board 4. At this stage looking around the room is was good to see how the layout was progressing and after the tracks are laid on this board there is only one other board plus the liftout section to go.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The first track to be laid across the join was the Up relief track. This then allowed the remaining tracks towards the edge to use this track for spacing. The spacing was done using many offcut sleepers as spacers, this seemed to work well in conjunction with a long steel ruler. You often see layouts with track all over the place and not straight, how hard is it to use a straight edge and make it look right?</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPgYn8rAwOJNItPMNvdrUJQEH7gpocbHUpygYGrBuReAAffAf05Eoza6K8tF5ev4wyuTiNZDRNJjUP2-vMhi-sJRcUMkU6jppJGR8n99byq4M3155O18r3o7h9I5LnvA7qlapLxvE7uA/s2048/20200423_181933.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPgYn8rAwOJNItPMNvdrUJQEH7gpocbHUpygYGrBuReAAffAf05Eoza6K8tF5ev4wyuTiNZDRNJjUP2-vMhi-sJRcUMkU6jppJGR8n99byq4M3155O18r3o7h9I5LnvA7qlapLxvE7uA/w300-h400/20200423_181933.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tracks are finally laid across the join and onto board 5</td></tr></tbody></table>The above photo shows how all the tracks fan out across the two boards. As it was not possible to extend baseboards into the centre of the room it was necessary to have long storage roads along the long wall. And having this baseboard so long meant one set of joins and legs less which had to be good. The use of the diamond crossing adds some interest to the trackwork and I thinks looks good. You can also see the microswitches installed to provide power to the frogs. They will be eventually covered with scenery when that stage is ready.<br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p>MoonShinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14969031394913677234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-63559300823165294.post-81322357360471074192021-08-07T06:03:00.004-07:002021-08-07T06:03:47.963-07:00In the corner<p><span style="font-family: arial;"> After constructing the relatively easy two track narrow section that is situated at the rear of the monitors on the desk, the next section is also custom made to fit above a computer server. This is also where the layout will reach the maximum height which also allows a grade to be built. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This board is designed on the corner to fan out from the double track across the join to a multi track yard that will run the length of the room and provide tracks for storage, an up and down relief road. Also two industry sidings have been provided into the corners. One will be for cement wagons and the other for a private industry. It is planned to serve louvre vans and will take about two wagons. And in the inside corner it is planned a container depot with two dead end sidings. The head shunt for these will require that siding to be vacant so that the container wagons can be divided and shunted into the two tracks. As there are currently more container wagons than the sidings can hold it will be necessary to hold the overflow in the storage sidings until the others have been unloaded or loaded and then shunted into position. These generally go for around $600+ so for only $175 I took a chance and hoped for the best when I got home. Finally a turntable was obtained for the loco area but when it was taken out of the box and placed on the layout there was a virtual overhang around one edge, not really suitable for storing locos on. This turntable also included an extra box of add on tracks which can increase capacity by replacing the plain grey segments with ones containing rail. So a super bargain.<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5kdn9oRzdPDKF5yln-P9qqdhoSe_F3tKuHAQIvhryGKRmn-enzlWJWE9v8lz5YYJyYAEuQR8_aHFfUhCuS0imD4K4Wm6h-jwMAf5nCffIgjtJqYcT680lJfFVx-5hl5dDTw8akBwCdg/s2048/20190524_193435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5kdn9oRzdPDKF5yln-P9qqdhoSe_F3tKuHAQIvhryGKRmn-enzlWJWE9v8lz5YYJyYAEuQR8_aHFfUhCuS0imD4K4Wm6h-jwMAf5nCffIgjtJqYcT680lJfFVx-5hl5dDTw8akBwCdg/w300-h400/20190524_193435.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Test fit for the turntable<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table>As the photo above shows either the turntable is too big or the layout is not wide enough. Although it is better to plan out the layout on paper you can't get the perspective that happens when you actually lay the physical track, models and buildings onto the actual board. One great tool to use is by going onto the Peco web site and printing off actual size paper templates, cutting the out and putting into position on the baseboard. This will then prove if you have enough room for everything planned. They don't do a template for plain track but it is easy to lay down some flex track between the paper points.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivMyW6K9npLFNQzx8VMYgWk3rQKiOAP9yrpz_vCE-K_b3sNIuzpMFbUhPijVxXOyZjMp5W4JpGgyVjp3DIYU2EJCip3qRs-1Us271x3VkQul3fjZdXfK6hL0HBOPu8gcoCxGxvqSF8oA/s2048/20190511_213018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivMyW6K9npLFNQzx8VMYgWk3rQKiOAP9yrpz_vCE-K_b3sNIuzpMFbUhPijVxXOyZjMp5W4JpGgyVjp3DIYU2EJCip3qRs-1Us271x3VkQul3fjZdXfK6hL0HBOPu8gcoCxGxvqSF8oA/w300-h400/20190511_213018.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Track is laid out to see how it all fits</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJbyUbmZXsMexqhlSIwvCAtZQRTV2SvitK_tlWLVUSiQAZxs_78HEwq3YZYlbRtux9KA9DYplOM7zqchHyiISuAr2EiI9MOr1Qy4rzCKgpiecT8IZu6ZsU99rvluxA1cD44lHw_4LkIA/s2048/20190516_164111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJbyUbmZXsMexqhlSIwvCAtZQRTV2SvitK_tlWLVUSiQAZxs_78HEwq3YZYlbRtux9KA9DYplOM7zqchHyiISuAr2EiI9MOr1Qy4rzCKgpiecT8IZu6ZsU99rvluxA1cD44lHw_4LkIA/w300-h400/20190516_164111.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Laying out the track design from the door end<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">In the above photo the track design is fine tuned to the required finished product. It was decided to use the Peco code 75 medium length points rather than the long points to save space. Also where the level and railmotor are shown will be a passenger platform, the only one on the layout. It will be an island platform and cut to go across the join. You should go back and refresh and read this entry and this sets out all the proposals for the layout, now comes the practical part where the tools come out and a start can be made.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The baseboards will be built using 70mm x 20mm pine for the framework and 7mm ply for the top. As with the plan a start was made on baseboard No.1. This baseboard combined with baseboard No. 2 will contain the loco depot and an island passenger station. There are limitations on the size of the baseboards mainly based on how much room do you need left over for yourself? The finished plan provides a good balance and plenty of operation possibilities.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The ply and timber were obtained and a start was made on the first baseboard. Naturally the construction was carried out in the back yard and under cover in case of rain. A drop saw made sure the timber was cut to the right angle and more than one drill also made things easier. The frame was made and then the ply was added to the top. To prevent moisture on the top layer it was painted with leftover paint, colour not being important as it will all be eventually covered over.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The baseboard for the first two boards was set at 119cm high and the track will climb to 123cm on baseboard No. 4. This will cut out having a flat track all around and will provide some effort from the locos to take trains around the layout. Most sidings will be level but unfortunately the coal siding on baseboard No. 6 will be on a grade, maybe the locos will have to be on the train permanently to avoid runaways?</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYwZenilJJ4dN-PJ9nFQ_-4Hi-6NnhrRud-XqU7r5uNtqcsckYOkGqWyUr4z7EgFgXAmVY5vPfsclEKhYZ5rgeTR9qn8h6CvntpAcmyYCZyGZW3TdydOpvx8TWGwq86rzer6aXEU4V2w/s2048/20190509_164723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYwZenilJJ4dN-PJ9nFQ_-4Hi-6NnhrRud-XqU7r5uNtqcsckYOkGqWyUr4z7EgFgXAmVY5vPfsclEKhYZ5rgeTR9qn8h6CvntpAcmyYCZyGZW3TdydOpvx8TWGwq86rzer6aXEU4V2w/w300-h400/20190509_164723.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One down, five and a liftout to go.</td></tr></tbody></table></p><span style="font-family: arial;">The first baseboard was constructed and all went well, The odd shaped corner was for the liftout section across the doorway and runs between this board and the last one to be built. The board is surprisingly light but strong. It is all screwed together making it fairly rigid. The holes for the wiring were yet to be made, easier to do them at this stage.</span><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The second adjoining board is to contain the loco depot and this is to include a turntable when one becomes available. So at one end of this board it was made wider to accommodate the turntable, it was purely guesswork as to how wide it needs to be. Planning was done by dry laying track and points down on the ground to visualise how it would go.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC8wy2NyGiEO4t6jNDyXX0QQpUTEqU70HRwoO9pjhK6hjFCcSvz5kzZOGCGSO0xn40edKjOc3YjdiJO240bdpdjSzDPVPlidJsqVcSLZsYyImaSGyks88nIyugGWsxJE9rH-U8woBG1Q/s2048/20190508_162258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC8wy2NyGiEO4t6jNDyXX0QQpUTEqU70HRwoO9pjhK6hjFCcSvz5kzZOGCGSO0xn40edKjOc3YjdiJO240bdpdjSzDPVPlidJsqVcSLZsYyImaSGyks88nIyugGWsxJE9rH-U8woBG1Q/w300-h400/20190508_162258.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Board No. 2 wider section to cater for the turntable</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">Having completed the two boards, they were both carried inside into the room to see how they would go. Legs were made for the first board and the second board was secured to the first using two bolts and wingnuts. There didn't seem any point in providing four legs for each section of baseboard. They were again dismantled and taken outside for painting the top of the boards.</span><p></p></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaLsTCz-idlT8u4XEVoXRrEXcYvGKBLRH0MrkMXqT7dbKBZLqtPWdLCqsRjx5HKTXQw37Pd4ZOmUntimra367BbnKeahmEMbMdKfYiCTlL3uaGyLd_WK2to1ZyT61yoA7XQStV264sIA/s2048/20190517_141712.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaLsTCz-idlT8u4XEVoXRrEXcYvGKBLRH0MrkMXqT7dbKBZLqtPWdLCqsRjx5HKTXQw37Pd4ZOmUntimra367BbnKeahmEMbMdKfYiCTlL3uaGyLd_WK2to1ZyT61yoA7XQStV264sIA/w300-h400/20190517_141712.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A quick dry out in the sun</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu214VnVvqmld6BTPPd1TyL1cIgt0pZIeWang4YQYQwLPf3uecF8w2-5MM8tp6R0emhtJCgN8gu2O45hslamv_TQdXh7kqJ75f5eq_BjzCTUe4eb0wPgC8hRDp-GBnm9nqeejoBv3_lA/s2048/20190517_141809.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu214VnVvqmld6BTPPd1TyL1cIgt0pZIeWang4YQYQwLPf3uecF8w2-5MM8tp6R0emhtJCgN8gu2O45hslamv_TQdXh7kqJ75f5eq_BjzCTUe4eb0wPgC8hRDp-GBnm9nqeejoBv3_lA/w300-h400/20190517_141809.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The first two boards are ready</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">It didn't take long to paint the first two boards, a sunny day helping along. There are usually two and sometimes three when the junior kookies are around and will land usually on the table waiting for the meat to be brought out. As you can see the baseboard was in the way of their usual landing strip so that's where they landed. They only come in for a quick feed and then they fly off until the next day. The table was rather cluttered with tools and junk so I think he made a good choice on that spot.</span></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdC2ak1YYqmBkvTZ4qn_V8ePVKvtSYKuN3L_2a0ywciZVEsXt-x0Wikte04q0XwTtMyfw_nv6O-v02Izz_IltyyqPiIVhr3nXt260KaUofu-WXMYjvJWE4izY1ecuHB2JgRABfl-NL2g/s2048/20190509_215253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdC2ak1YYqmBkvTZ4qn_V8ePVKvtSYKuN3L_2a0ywciZVEsXt-x0Wikte04q0XwTtMyfw_nv6O-v02Izz_IltyyqPiIVhr3nXt260KaUofu-WXMYjvJWE4izY1ecuHB2JgRABfl-NL2g/w300-h400/20190509_215253.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Turntable area</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">The above photo shows where a turntable of some sort will go, the only large round shape around came out of the pot draw in the kitchen. It always pays to plan ahead with the ideas that you want to incorporate into a layout. Drawing up with a pencil on paper is a cheap way of transferring what you want in your head to a visual that can be easily understood.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">You could take it a step further and use track designing software and get a closer to final design.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Keeping in mind that the layout is also a bedroom there is a fine line on how much real estate you can hand over to the layout and still be comfortable with the space left over. There has to be room for a desk, computer server, bedroom furniture and of course a bed. And by using the room that used to be a single car garage, it is the ideal shape to have longer sides to form storage for freight and also the loco depot area.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDnBhNSxY1xs7FpM4cjSrZYI04MXg_1Telvrl5PVcOYPNnOMfzaZdyXuJhHrw2isuM7XmJDlQbtwkH1BPZNVt_R0b1axCgYaZ8PPLWlR-YFppkmvJ5fkaj3w09lKldfFbfJkqHB2O_iA/s2048/Layout+Plan+-+Modules.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1121" data-original-width="2048" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDnBhNSxY1xs7FpM4cjSrZYI04MXg_1Telvrl5PVcOYPNnOMfzaZdyXuJhHrw2isuM7XmJDlQbtwkH1BPZNVt_R0b1axCgYaZ8PPLWlR-YFppkmvJ5fkaj3w09lKldfFbfJkqHB2O_iA/w400-h219/Layout+Plan+-+Modules.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The baseboard designs<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">The above plan shows how the baseboards will sit in the room. As can be seen, no two boards are the same. I am not sure if this design fits the 'module' concept where many modules are a standard size. The boards will be produced numerically clockwise around the room and will manage to fit in around certain items of furniture. A desk will be under Baseboard 3. This will mean a narrow board to be just wide enough for the double main line to skirt the rear of the desk and allow monitors to be placed in front. The placement of a computer server under Baseboard number 4 has been good and bad news. This will be the highest area of the layout and the baseboard designed to allow the server to be removed at any time if needed. This will also allow for a grade to be built in and take away the flat 'Nullabor' feel. Baseboard 5 will be level and Baseboard 6 will be where the track will drop level back to that of Baseboards 1 and 2.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgobNTBKyGCKapwdfftrtwJMlYgCdYzQVm1i0G7SBv2Man9GZt6hxfVKiFHlqMBsqig4yxX1a6rhuh24miEKd8v2D4Bfypl9jHCbMK7RwG3_1-SNhtPIaR3YezYzl-hg-1YzZ5T8EL8kA/s2048/Layout+Plan+-+Track+Plan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1121" data-original-width="2048" height="219" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgobNTBKyGCKapwdfftrtwJMlYgCdYzQVm1i0G7SBv2Man9GZt6hxfVKiFHlqMBsqig4yxX1a6rhuh24miEKd8v2D4Bfypl9jHCbMK7RwG3_1-SNhtPIaR3YezYzl-hg-1YzZ5T8EL8kA/w400-h219/Layout+Plan+-+Track+Plan.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The track design for the layout.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">As can be seen from the above plan this represents what will probably be the final track layout design. The track will be Peco code 75 track and their medium points will be used in lieu of their longer points to enable more siding length to be provided. There will also be a crossover on the liftout section which will enable mainly light locomotives to be able to return back to the loco area. It will also allow a coal train travelling in the anti-clockwise direction to have direct access to the coal siding located in the far corner of Baseboard 6. The two container sidings will also fill a corner over the server box.</span></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyz37fwgZJngkjCKOWulKHHlVoLreQwKktnYxOa2sqRRD4Ht1OQ_w9KFbAoBDBpikHgsnDicSynB3nGa7lYwxYu1WCXN47qaq7qzrljHahAhKBIkZGGJSW14oUnN02oCAQo4CX9EiX6w/s2048/Layout+Plan+-+Structures.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1156" data-original-width="2048" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyz37fwgZJngkjCKOWulKHHlVoLreQwKktnYxOa2sqRRD4Ht1OQ_w9KFbAoBDBpikHgsnDicSynB3nGa7lYwxYu1WCXN47qaq7qzrljHahAhKBIkZGGJSW14oUnN02oCAQo4CX9EiX6w/w400-h226/Layout+Plan+-+Structures.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The planned location of structures<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: arial;">The above plan shows where the various items will be placed. Basically the top of the plan area provides for all the loco requirements. This will include a turntable with external roads for loco storage. A Fleischmann electric turntable was sourced from the Castle Hill Model railway exhibition back in 2019 at the second hand stall and will be installed in the loco area. The baseboard will need to be wider at this point to accomodate the turntable and tracks. There will be a passenger platform also on this baseboard, nothing fancy just an island platform where passengers get on, do a lap and then get off at the same station. All the points on these two boards will be motor worked by a panel to be located at the front of Baseboard 2. At Baseboard 3 this will be where the tracks start to rise up towards Baseboard 4. It is hoped the grade will not be too severe.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Baseboard construction will be covered in the next post.</span></p>MoonShinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14969031394913677234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-63559300823165294.post-57622039019361782712020-09-26T00:40:00.002-07:002020-09-26T00:46:35.832-07:00And so it begins<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">When starting the layout there were certain features that I wanted to incorporate into the design. Some of these features are:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><ul><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Locomotive Depot</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Double Track</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Freight Sidings</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Industries (Coal, Oil, Goods, Cement)</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Container Sidings</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Turntable</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;">Passenger Platform</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The layout baseboards are constructed as modules to allow future removal. Because I also reside in the bedroom, it limited the width of the layout to 40cm where the yard and engine depot are but baseboards in other areas are narrower. However the baseboard was made wider to incorporate the turn table and some industries in the corners.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;">The first track design plan is shown below, which is close to the final design.</span></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDuxdVnSTMHmTLtj2I3ypI8EUpDlS5GDGzvMnaHdycyNiH2hq7MCpfK7sINcO4L6V1042ym84wVS7GM8bUlr9KTTQKRI3iEuWhv2TIPXTrXDSN_l5xyI5GB2-iKuzwgdwmPHvXgm_jzw/w480-h640/20200109_175003.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left;" width="480" /></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rough first track design</td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #ffa400; font-family: arial;">Locomotive Depot</span></h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">As I wanted to run both diesel and steam locomotives this area needed to provide servicing for both types. This will include inspection pits, water column, sanding tower, turn table and ash pits. There will be a diesel shed for diesels and a turntable with storage tracks for the steam engines.</span></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #ffa400;">Double Track</span></span></h3><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">The layout was designed to be double track for multiple train operation but we can also have one track closed for single line operation.Trains will need to access yards and loco depot using both tracks. Various crossovers between the up and down mains will allow this to happen. There will be relief sidings for the up and down main to store and pass other trains.</span></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #ffa400;">Freight Sidings</span></span></h3><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">There will be two long dead end sidings for storage and shunting of trains on the opposite side of the room from the loco depot beside the relief lines.</span></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #ffa400;">Industries</span></span></h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">To add interest to operation there are four industries; coal, oil, goods and cement. Three of the industries are going to be dead-end sidings but the coal loader will be on its own siding that can be entered and exited from both ends onto the main line. </span></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #ffa400;">Container Sidings</span></span></h3><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Two dead end sidings will be provided for container train operations, they will hold around five wagons in each siding. These sidings are accessed through a diamond crossing which comes off a relief road. There is currently thirteen container wagons so shunting will be required to load/unload the entire train.</span></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #ffa400;">Turntable</span></span></h3><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Having steam and single-ended diesels on the layout the turn table is a necessity to be able to turn the engines around. It has twelve storage roads of various lengths around the turntable. I was lucky enough to obtain a second-hand Fleischmann 90-foot motorised turntable from the Castle Hill model railway exhibition in 2019. As the layout runs on DCC we added a frog juicer to automatically reverse the polarity as the turntable turns.</span></div><h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="color: #ffa400;">Passenger Platform</span></span></h3><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">As I will be running passenger trains an island platform will be located opposite the loco depot along the main lines. There was not enough room to incorporate a second station on the opposite side of the layout. Additional freight storage was decided on.</span></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The next post will cover baseboard construction.</span><p></p>MoonShinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14969031394913677234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-63559300823165294.post-82079601773881750852020-08-08T05:22:00.008-07:002020-09-26T00:41:50.954-07:00In The Beginning...<h3 style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="color: #ffa400; font-family: arial;">Background</span></b></h3><p><span style="font-family: arial;">I was lucky to have grown up with access to a large HO model layout that my father and I built together in a shed in the backyard. Some time into my 20's of age I stopped being interested in model trains as my interest in computers grew.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">When I heard that Auscision was going to do a DCC/Sound version of the 'C' Class Locomotives a few years back, I pre-ordered some and started to get interested again in model trains, sound adds another dimension to modelling.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">By this stage my father had converted from HO to On30 Narrow Gauge (Puffing Billy) in the shed which is the wrong scale for my ordered rollingstock of HO. I jokingly said I should build a HO scale layout in my bedroom expecting to hear no, but he agreed and planning started not long after.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">The bedroom is roughly 5.5m x 2.8m wide and we decided to place it around the four walls with a pullout section where the door is to make a continual loop. The only requirements I gave were a turntable, coal mine and double track main, I can have one of those tracks busy with maintenance to go back to single line.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">This blog will follow the construction/running of the HO scale layout, which I am calling "East Coast Rail"</span></p>MoonShinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14969031394913677234noreply@blogger.com0
